Wheelin’ Warriors

The Wheelin’ Warriors are a group comprised of 11 athletes with special needs aged 17 to 57 who formerly competed in cycling as members of North Santa Barbara County Special Olympics. The team overcame a few big hurdles before becoming members of the Tailwinds Bicycle Club. In September 2008, days before a major competition of the Special Olympics Cycling Team’s regular season, the athletes’ bikes and equipment were stolen out of a locked trailer. The response from individual donors and organizations was overwhelming and allowed for the replacement of the stolen equipment and for a new cargo trailer.

wheelin warriors At the same time, the team learned that the Southern CA Special Olympics Organization had decided to cancel several sponsored sports for 2009, including Cycling. Upon learning that Special Olympics Cycling had also been canceled, several donors then directed their support to the formation of a cycling club for athletes with special needs to ensure the athletes could still participate in cycling and to allow for the expansion of the team.

The head coach of the Special Olympics Cycling team, Cheryl Dettrick, sought to organize a year round opportunity for these athletes and formed the Wheelin’ Warriors Club. With this, we secured a new trailer, uniforms, supplies, and monthly transportation for the athletes to various ride locations. To formally establish the Wheelin’ Warriors as a non-profit club, the Wheelin’ Warriors approached Tailwinds Bicycle Club to discuss opportunities for the athletes and families to join as members. In January 2009 the Warriors became an official part of the Tailwinds Bicycle Club of Santa Maria.

Better Bike Beverly Hills campaign

As an organizer of Better Bike here in Beverly Hills, I’m trying to get
policymakers and transportation professionals in City Hall to
recognize the value of investing in bike improvements and facilities. It’s
been a long haul, but finally we’re seeing some modest progress.

I want to reach out to Westside clubs, shops, and bike advocates to give a
heads-up about upcoming meetings where Beverly Hills will take comment on
four routes identified for possible improvements: Beverly, Charleville,
Carmelita and Crescent drives.

Our Wine Country Bike Trek is well established and one of the most popular cycling events in Santa Barbara County. The entire ride takes place in the Santa Ynez Valley wine country. Riders will have a choice of signing up for a three day ride, June 29 through July 1, with camping for two nights at Midland School in Los Olivos, or a one day ride on Saturday, June 30. Our goal is a minimum of 150 riders.

Choose a Three-Day or One-Day Ride

Our three-day ride begins at Hans Christian Andersen Park in Solvang, Friday, June 29. We’ll transport your camping gear to our campsite as you begin your scenic tour of the Santa Ynez Valley. Choose a 30 or 50-mile route each day. Volunteers will greet you every ten miles with fully catered rest stops. One-day-riders begin and end at our campsite in Los Olivos and take a 30 or 50-mile route on Saturday, June 30.

Sleep under the stars in Los Olivos and after your ride, get ready for some unbelievable dinner feasts. Meals will include a traditional pasta dinner on Friday complete with salad and garlic bread and on Saturday a tri-tip and chicken barbecue plus a vegetarian option. The barbecue is compliments of the Santa Barbara Suburban Kiwanis - a donation they have made for 29 years! Santa Ynez Valley wines will be provided free of charge at both dinners and after dinner it’s music time…kick back and relax or kick up your heels and dance to local bands including Foggy Dew Friday and Saturday night.

Cycling in Los Angeles just got easier !!!

Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition

Dear LACBC Supporters,

Just to keep the momentum going for tomorrow’s rally, we wanted to share with you some good coverage we received today in the LA Times about our work on the Bicycle Master Plan update!

latimes.com

Bicycle master plan is expected to be approved by the L.A. City Council

It’s been a long ride, but bicycle riders’ push for for new routes and services is paying off. The plan calls for 1,680 miles of interconnected bikeways.

Cruising

Cyclists flood Spring Street for the city’s first CicLAvia, which closed many streets for part of a day last October. The proposed master plan would eventually create 1,680 miles of interconnected bikeways.

When Mayor  Antonio Villaraigosa crashed his bike on Venice Boulevard last summer, he did more than bruise his head and shatter his elbow. He became an advocate for the city’s bicycling community.

After he was jolted off his bike by a turning taxicab, Villaraigosa convened a bicycle summit, launched a safety campaign to educate drivers and threw his support behind the city’s first CicLAvia, which closed 71/2 miles of city streets to traffic for most of a day.

He also put his clout behind an ambitious bicycle master plan that is expected to be passed Tuesday by the City Council.

The plan lays out a long-term goal of 1,680 miles of interconnected bikeways and calls for more than 200 miles of new bicycle routes every five years. It suggests that such major arteries as Figueroa Street, Wilshire Boulevard and Santa Monica Boulevard get bike lanes in the near future.

And it marks the ascendance of a brash new breed of cycling civic activist.

“They’re very vocal, and I like that,” said Villaraigosa.
